Monster Romance – Recs please? (and a few suggestions)
You know, when I first started reading mangas as a teen it took me a while to get into them because I had to read them from right to left, which is the opposite way I read everything else. However, after some practice, I grew an appreciation for them and eventually found myself reading other international comic styles like South Korean manhwas.
Yes, reading manga and manhwas requires serious dedication as some series can have close to volumes! However, the characters in Solo Leveling are thrown into heroic roles without having any real skills. If you love a good fantasy story where the impossible seems inevitable and the elements of human determination, sacrifice, and willpower are the ultimate powers, check out these manhwa and manga like Solo Leveling.
I read that South Korean writers do this because the public can be harsh about their work.

Facing nerves and worries that she is going to be sick for her first date, a girl takes a large dose of medication meant to restore cells. Unfortunately, this drug was not meant to be used in that manner always follow instructions and the young girl is transformed into a zombie. The series is a bit too short-lived and rushed to leave a lasting impression, but this also makes it a quick fun read. Short and sweet, this series has enough quirks to let it sneak onto this list.

Maybe your date talks on their phone to the entire time, talks constantly and never lets you get a word in, or maybe they even try to eat you. If you picked the last one then you are Ken Kaneki. Rescued from his torment by a group of peaceful ghouls working at the coffee shop, Anteiku, Kaneki struggles in his placement between two different world and discovers that ghouls are not all that different from us humans. But with Ghoul investigators, hostile ghouls, and even cannibalistic ones out on the hunt, Kaneki will have to endure many horrors to have a hope of protecting his friends. Zilia Papp. Illustrations, bibliographical references, index. ISBN FOR DECADES now, Japan has been experiencing a so-called yokai boom, an obsession with all things yokai–the monsters, spirits, and supernatural phenomena that have long played an important role in Japanese folklore and popular culture. Part and parcel of this “boom” has been a plethora of yokai-related novels, manga, anime animation , films, video games, journals, museum exhibitions, public forums, databases, and research targeting both popular and academic readerships.
Within this context, the book under review is important because of its explicit focus not on historical, folkloric, or literary materials, but on yokai imagery and the art historical context in which yokai are situated. Undeniably, a major facet of the contemporary attraction of yokai has been their visualization, particularly in the late twentieth and early twenty-first century manga and anime of Mizuki Shigeru b. Papp’s volume, as explained in the introduction, “focuses on the influence of Edo- and Meiji-period yokai imagery on contemporary manga and Japanese animation, and in particular on the works of contemporary manga artist Mizuki Shigeru as well as the animation series derived from it” 1.
Through this focused investigation, her broader theoretical objective is to “add to the body of research concerning art historical and aesthetic approaches towards works of animation, within the framework of Animation Studies, based on the conviction that animation and sequential art are visual art forms in their own rights, and because of this, it is important to investigate their aesthetic and art historical links” 7.
The brief early chapters consist of a review of literature relating to yokai art, to animation studies more generally, and to the “New Vienna School approach” that Papp
